Lumbini Plantation

The Lumbini Plantation is located near Deniyaya in the Ruhuna region of southern Sri Lanka, right on the edge of the Sinharaja Rainforest. It is one of the country’s well-known family-run businesses and was established in 1975 by Dayapala Jayawardana. The name Lumbini refers to the birthplace of Buddha in Nepal.

The plantation’s own land covers approximately 120 hectares. The tea gardens are situated at an altitude of about 450 to 500 meters, placing them within Sri Lanka’s low-grown tea-growing region. Annual production amounts to approximately 600,000 kilograms of processed tea. In addition, Lumbini collaborates with numerous smallholders from the surrounding valley.

The plantation’s historical development includes its growth from a family business into an internationally renowned producer of high-quality Ceylon teas. Chaminda Jayawardana continued this development into the next generation. Lumbini became particularly known for innovative specialty teas and handcrafted teas.

The plantation’s location near the Sinharaja Rainforest continues to shape it to this day. The humid climate, clean air, and unique biodiversity of the area define the natural conditions on site. In recent years, the farm has also further expanded its ecological focus, including through organic farming methods and sustainable projects with local producers.
