Gopaldhara Plantation

The Gopaldhara Plantation is located in the Mirik Valley in the Darjeeling region and is one of the region’s well-known high-altitude gardens. Its history dates back to 1881. The name Gopaldhara derives from the former owner of the fields there, Gopal, and the numerous small streams in the area, which are locally known as dhara.

The total area of the plantation is approximately 320 hectares. Of this, about 172 hectares are planted with tea. The tea gardens are situated at altitudes ranging from approximately 1,675 to 2,135 meters. Annual production is around 90,000 kilograms of tea.

As part of the plantation’s historical development, the first tea fields were established between 1881 and 1910. In 1918, a factory powered by its own hydroelectricity was built. The current manager’s house was constructed in 1920. Later, the plantation passed through various owners and is now run by the Saria family.

Due to its high altitude, long history, and significance within the Darjeeling growing region, Gopaldhara is still regarded today as a plantation rich in tradition and historical interest.
