Plantation Information

Singell Plantation

The Singell Plantation is located below Kurseong in the Darjeeling region and is one of the oldest and best-known tea gardens in the area. The plantation’s history dates back to the early 1860s. 1861 is usually cited as the year of its founding. Singell was established during the British colonial era and was one of Darjeeling’s major early tea gardens at the time.

The cultivation areas are situated at altitudes ranging from approximately 1,000 to 1,600 meters. The total area is reported to be around 550 hectares. Depending on the source, approximately 242 to 282 hectares of this are dedicated to tea cultivation. Annual production is around 70,000 kilograms of tea.

Part of the plantation’s history is that, in addition to tea, coffee was initially cultivated there on a large scale. Later, tea proved to be the more successful crop. Historical accounts also mention that some of the old Chinese tea bushes from the early planting period have survived to this day. The name Singell is associated with an early British manager or owner named James Singell or James White, depending on the historical source.

Today, Singell is known for organic and biodynamic cultivation. Due to its long history, its size, and its early development within Darjeeling tea cultivation, Singell is still considered a plantation rich in tradition and of historical interest.
