Selimbong Plantation

The Selimbong Plantation is located in Darjeeling near the India-Nepal border and is one of the older tea gardens in the region. Locally, it is also known as Sulbung. It was founded in 1866. The total area is approximately 300 to 307 hectares, of which about 160 hectares are planted with tea. The average annual production is around 100,000 kilograms of tea.

Part of the plantation’s history is that Selimbong was first leased in 1866. William Lloyd is named as the first British tenant. The name Sulbung is said to derive from the many orange trees in the area. Since 1995, the plantation has been managed by Tea Promoters India.

The location at an altitude of approximately 1,180 to 1,655 meters continues to define the growing region to this day. In some areas, older plantations from the British era are said to still exist. Selimbong is therefore considered a plantation rich in tradition and historical interest within Darjeeling.
