Mokalbari Plantation

The Mokalbari Plantation is located in Upper Assam in the Dibrugarh district on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River and is one of the region’s well-known large tea gardens. The name Mokalbari derives from the words “Mokal” and “Bari.” “Mokal” refers to a specific type of large bamboo tree, while “Bari” means garden or site.

The plantation’s history dates back to 1876. At that time, a British planter had the Mokal bamboo growing there cleared and established a tea plantation on the site. In the early 20th century, Mokalbari passed to the Kanoi family and, over time, developed into a well-known Assam garden.

The Mokalbari plantation itself is said to cover a total area of approximately 285.32 hectares. Of this, about 256.22 hectares are planted with tea. The average age of the tea bushes is reported to be around 25 years. Publicly reported production figures often refer to the entire Mokalbari Group, which comprises three tea gardens. For this group, an annual output of approximately 2 million kilograms of tea is cited. A clearly separate, uniformly reported annual volume for the Mokalbari plantation alone is not always explicitly stated publicly.

Due to its location in the Brahmaputra Valley, its early establishment, and its long history within Assam tea cultivation, Mokalbari is still considered a plantation rich in tradition and of historical significance.
