Makaibari Plantation

The Makaibari Plantation is located near Kurseong in the Darjeeling region and is one of the oldest and most famous tea gardens in the area. Its history dates back to 1859. The name Makaibari roughly translates to “cornfield” and refers to the land’s former use before tea cultivation.

The plantation is situated at altitudes ranging from approximately 900 to 1,200 meters. Its total area is reported to be around 673 hectares. Of this, approximately 248 to 274 hectares are planted with tea, while a large portion of the remaining area consists of forested land. Annual production is around 100,000 kilograms of tea.

The plantation’s history includes its early role in organic and biodynamic farming. Makaibari is considered a pioneer in this field and received early organic certification in 1988. The close connection between tea cultivation, forested areas, and village communities continues to shape the plantation to this day.

Due to its long history, its size, and its unique development in natural farming, Makaibari is still regarded today as a historically significant and traditional plantation within the Darjeeling growing region.
