Melfort Plantation

The Melfort Plantation is located in the Pussellawa Valley in Sri Lanka, along the road leading to Nuwara Eliya. It is one of the region’s historically significant plantations. The area was cleared for early coffee cultivation as early as 1826, making it one of the country’s oldest plantation sites. Melfort later developed into a tea plantation.

The plantation is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters. Historical records list Melfort as having around 475 acres of tea-growing land, which corresponds to about 192 hectares. However, publicly available, standardized data on the total plantation area is limited.

The plantation’s history also includes its close connection to tea production in Pussellawa. A green tea factory is associated with Melfort, whose roots date back to 1918. More recent company data cite an annual production capacity of approximately 350 to 550 tons for the site.

Due to its early history, its location in the central highlands, and its long association with tea and, previously, coffee cultivation, Melfort is still considered a traditional and historically interesting plantation in Sri Lanka.
