The Greenfield Plantation is located in the Uva Highlands near Haputale in Sri Lanka and is one of the region’s well-known organically managed tea gardens. Its current development began in 1990 with the restoration of a previously neglected tea garden. Organic certification followed in 1992, and Greenfield Organic Plantations was established as a company in 1997.
The cultivation areas are situated at an altitude of approximately 1,525 to 1,830 meters. Publicly available, consistent data on the total plantation area and annual production volume for Greenfield is not consistently available. However, it is reliably documented that at least 85 hectares of tea land have been converted into a biodiverse forest-tea system.
The plantation’s historical development also includes its early focus on organic, biodynamic, and fair-trade cultivation. Greenfield is part of Greenfield Bio Plantations and is mentioned in public descriptions alongside Thotulagalla. Since 2003, the site has also been documented in the fair-trade sector.
Due to its location in the Uva Highlands, its consistent ecological focus, and its significance for organic tea cultivation in Sri Lanka, Greenfield is still considered a historically interesting and modern plantation today.
